New Country Pursuits Programme at Stonyhurst College

02.11.2026

In our conversations with families, we are often struck by how many of our young clients share a passion for nature, hunting and country life. Over dinner with representatives of Stonyhurst College in May this year, this led to an idea: why not develop a dedicated after-school activity around these interests?

Stonyhurst is particularly well placed to offer such a programme. Its rural setting, close ties with landowning families in the school community and surrounding area, ponds on the school grounds and even an indoor shooting range provide an ideal starting point.

No sooner said than done. Four weeks ago, Stonyhurst announced its new Country Pursuits Programme, which has already been introduced this academic year. Through a series of talks, practical workshops and field visits, pupils explore a range of subjects, including clay pigeon shooting, fishing, pheasant rearing, pheasant and duck shooting, stalking, wildlife biology and natural habitats.

At the end of the academic year, pupils will put their knowledge to the test in an examination modelled on the theoretical elements of the German hunting licence examination.

An impressive start: Just twelve places are available on the Country Pursuits Programme each year. In September 2026, all twelve were snapped up within an hour.
